Kent House Knightsbridge: A Historic London Venue Shaped by Extraordinary Women

The Women behind Kent House Knightsbridge

At first glance, Kent House Knightsbridge may appear to be another London venue steeped in royal history and the legacies of famous men. Look a little closer, however, and a different story emerges, one of remarkable women who shaped, built and transformed this house into the prestigious event venue it is today. From Madame de St. Laurent’s grace and influence to Lady Louisa Ashburton’s bold architectural vision and Lady Noble’s celebrated cultural salon, Kent House has been defined by women whose impact still resonates in every corner.

For event organisers seeking a women-focused London venue or a historic event space celebrating female achievement, Kent House offers a unique setting where history, heritage and female leadership intersect.

The Women Behind Kent House

Madame de St. Laurent: Grace and Influence in Royal History

Kent House’s story begins in 1790, when Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, father of Queen Victoria, built the original residence. While the Duke established the property’s royal prestige, Madame Alphonsine-Thérèse-Bernardine-Julie de Montgenêt de Saint-Laurent, his partner for 28 years, also left her influence.

Described as “an elegant, well bred, pleasing, sensible woman” with “intrepid fortitude yet possessing the finest temper and refined manners,” Madame de St. Laurent withdrew with dignity when dynastic obligations required the Duke to marry elsewhere. Her grace and strength set a precedent for female resilience, leaving an indelible mark on Kent House’s history. Though the original building was demolished in 1870, its legacy laid the foundation for the women-led story that followed.

Lady Louisa Ashburton: Visionary Architect of the current Kent House Knightsbridge

The Kent House we know today exists thanks to Lady Louisa Ashburton, a wealthy and independent Victorian widow who boldly carved her place in a male-dominated world. In an era when women had limited property rights, Lady Ashburton became the first person to secure a plot on the prestigious Knightsbridge estate. She championed her architectural vision despite working in an exclusively male profession. Her architect dismissively described her as “a perfect dingle dousie”  yet she persisted, taking “a lively interest in the design of the building” and ensuring her vision was realised.

For over three decades, Lady Ashburton lived at Kent House, establishing a legacy of independence, vision, and perseverance, qualities that resonate with modern women leaders and entrepreneurs. She was an arts patron, using her resources and platform to support creativity and culture, establishing a tradition the venue continues today. Today, event planners can celebrate that very spirit when hosting female leadership events or women-focused corporate gatherings at Kent House.

Lady Noble: Cultivating London’s Premier Cultural Salon

After Lady Ashburton’s death in 1903, Lady Noble, granddaughter of engineering pioneer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, transformed Kent House into one of London’s most celebrated cultural destinations. In the first-floor drawing rooms , the very spaces available for events today, she curated a salon that became the centre of London’s artistic life.

Lady Noble invited leading musicians and the legendary Les Ballets Russes, championed female performers during a time of social prejudice, and welcomed royalty including Princess Marie-Louise. Beyond entertainment, she fostered connection, bringing together artists, aristocrats and innovators under one roof. When World War II arrived, Lady Noble left Kent House to serve the Red Cross, showing the same selfless dedication demonstrated by Madame de St. Laurent generations before.

Royal Heritage and Female Leadership in Every Detail

Kent House offers a unique blend of royal heritage and female legacy. The first-floor drawing rooms where Lady Noble once hosted Les Ballets Russes now host conferences, award ceremonies and gala dinners, seamlessly combining historic elegance with modern technical capabilities. This dual heritage makes Kent House a rare and compelling choice for historic London event venues or women-focused corporate events.

The venue’s Knightsbridge location further enhances its appeal, with convenient access from public transport, proximity to world-class hotels and a prestigious central postcode. Whether hosting an intimate board dinner or a larger-scale conference, Kent House delivers flexibility, sophistication and historical significance in every room.

Continuing the Legacy Today

Kent House continues to champion women in the events industry through partnerships with female-led suppliers and curated spaces highlighting female speakers and performers. This is a continuation of the legacy begun by Lady Ashburton and Lady Noble, reinforcing that women’s leadership is central to Kent House’s identity.

For event organisers, this makes Kent House more than just a venue. It’s a story, a platform, and a stage, a place where female achievement is celebrated across generations.
